Burger fans don’t have to go far to get a burger in Dubai. There are host of international burger joints ready to serve up whatever combination takes your fancy (beetroot and pineapple anyone?). From homegrown UAE chains like Burger Rebel to chains from all over the world, including the UK (Gourmet Burger Kitchen), New Zealand (Burger Fuel), Canada (South Street Burger Co.), Sweden (Max Burger).
Plus of course, the good ol’ USA, which boasts the highest number of fast-casual burger restaurants in Dubai including Johnny Rockets, Shake Shack, Elevation Burger, Fuddruckers, Elevation Burger, Fatburger, Five Guys, The Counter, not to mention all of the fast-food outlets. The list goes on and on.
Mooyah is one such American chain which originated in Texas, which also just happens to have been proclaimed Best Burger Chain by Kris Fade on Virgin Radio last year. But it looks rather unspectacular, tucked away in the corner of the China Court in Ibn Battuta Mall, so I’ve bypassed it many times without so much as a glance.
This week I decided it was finally time to try a burger at Mooyah.
Like your typical burger joint, you don’t have many choices – burger or hot dog, sides, milkshakes, soda. In the “fast-casual” kind of way, you place your order and pay at the till, then get a buzzer, seat yourself and wait for your food to be ready (at which point you collet it yourself and take it back to your seat).
My date and I ordered one Texas Burger (double beef patties, BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, fried onion strings, grilled onions & pickles), one Mushroom Swiss (double beef patties, mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato, Swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms and grilled onions), a side of onion rings and a sweet potato fries to share. If you feel so inclined, you can substitute your beef for chicken or a veggie burger.
The verdict? The burgers were really, really good! Super juicy with the cheese melted on top of each patty. Just a touch of char to make it taste properly grilled. The flavours (BBQ sauce and mushroom and Swiss) weren’t overpowering like they often are. They bake their buns in-house, and they were just like I like them – soft and squidgy and just the right size so you actually taste the beef and not just a stodgy bread roll. Squeeze your burger and you see grease glistening at the surface. Wouldn’t want it any other way!
The onion rings were standard, but also good. The sweet potato fries were the only disappointment. Taste-wise they were fine, but they were served to us cold. Next time I’ll request a freshly fried batch. (Or I’ll just wait to eat my favourite sweet potato fries with chipotle-maple mayo at Prime 68 at the JW Marriott Marquis.)
Two double patty burgers, onion rings, sweet potato fries and one soda will set you back AED 100-110.
Dare I say this is my new favourite burger in Dubai? What do you make of Mooyah? What’s your favourite burger chain in Dubai?
